A truly iconic project to have played a part in! People often associate Glasgow with shipbuilding and over the years there has been less and less. So to see the HMS Glasgow leave the Govan shipyard and travel down the Clyde (on the barge) and then return once it had completed float off was not only incredible to see, but to have been a part of the team involved with making it happen is something that I will remember for a long time.
Malin Abram were awarded the contract to transport and launch the vessel on the banks of the Clyde. From transporting the various hull sections, to roll out and float off; I was tasked with capturing some key moments that would form an overall project overview video.
Owing to the nature of this project, this required a lot of onsite filming and overcoming the challenges that brings; setting up timelapse cameras at BAE Govan and the strict security measures in place, communicating with various third parties for capture of transportation down River Clyde and finally, capturing the vessel’s arrival at the float off location early morning for operation the following day.
Once all necessary footage was captured, and after receiving some from BAE, I could then set about compiling and commencing the editing stage. There were a number of challenges, the biggest of which was the fact our client was BAE Systems and the cargo in question was a warship. Therefore there was a lot of communication between myself, my Marketing Manager and the client, as to what we were allowed to show in the video, and what couldn’t under any circumstances.
